Smoothly Broken Power Law Spectra of Gamma-ray Bursts
نویسنده
چکیده
A five-parameter expression for a smoothly broken power law is presented. It is used to fit Gamma-Ray Burst spectra observed by BATSE. The function is compared to previously used fourparameter functions, such as a sharply broken power law and the Band et al. (1993) function. The presented function exists as a WINGSPAN routine at http://www.astro.su.se/∼felix/wing.html

Correlating prompt GRB photons with neutrinos
It is standard in theoretical neutrino astrophysics to use a broken power law approximation, based on the Band function, to describe the average photon flux of the prompt emission of Gamma-Ray Bursts. We will show that this approximation overestimates the contribution of high energy γ-rays (and underestimates low energy γ-rays). As a consequence models that rely on this approximation overestima...
متن کاملBlack–body components in Gamma–Ray Bursts spectra?
We study 7 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), detected both by the BATSE instrument, on– board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and by the Wide Field Camera (WFC), on board BeppoSAX. These bursts have measured spectroscopic redshifts and are a sizeable fraction of the bursts defining the correlation between the peak energy Epeak (i.e. the peak of the νFν spectrum) and the total prompt isotropic energy ...
متن کاملThe Shape of Spectral Breaks in Grb Afterglows
Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows are well described by synchrotron emission from relativistic blast waves expanding into an external medium. The blast wave is believed to amplify the magnetic field and accelerate the electrons into a power law distribution of energies promptly behind the shock. These electrons then cool both adiabatically and by emitting synchrotron and inverse Compton radiatio...
متن کاملOn the origin of gamma-ray bursts.
Gamma-ray bursts are the most energetic explosions in the Universe, occurring at cosmological distances. The initial phase of the emission from these bursts is predominantly of gamma rays and stems from a highly relativistic outflow. The nature of this emission is still under debate. Here, I present the interpretation that the peak in the photon spectrum can be attributed to the black-body emis...
متن کاملThe role of photon scattering in shaping the lightcurves and spectra of γ-ray bursts
We analyze the power spectra of the lightcurves of long gamma-ray bursts, dividing the sample in bins of luminosity, using the recently discovered variability-luminosity correlation. We find that the value of the variability parameter strongly correlates with the frequency that contains most of the power in the burst comoving frame. We compute the average power spectra in luminosity bins. The a...
